The gift of LIFE!

Oh wow... we are days away from the end of the year.  I am not going to lie-- this is a super exciting time in the non-profit world as we know supporters are considering end of year donations.  A simple trip to the mailbox may just be the answer to prayer that we are waiting for God to fill.  As an organization that thrives off of the generosity of others, in advance I want to say THANK YOU.

Are you considering an end-of-year gift to the Liberty Godparent Maternity Home?

Maybe I can share a few thoughts as you decide if or how much you are wanting to give this year.

First, we do not accept any government funding.  We strive to be good stewards of every penny that comes through the door of this Home.  That means: turning off the lights, juggling our errands in a manner that saves gas, freezing food for later, etc.  This also means that we are accountable to our donors and open to answering questions about how we use the gifts given to us.

Second, it costs about $83 a day to house a young lady.  However, your gift isn't just going into her care and future.  It is also invested into the care of the child she is carrying, providing support to her family, etc. Your gift is going to make a huge impact and go along way!

Third, we accept gifts in many different ways... and all are tax-deductible.  You can simple mail a check, make a donation online, or purchase items.  (We do have an Amazon list for those that aren't in driving distance) In whatever way you give, we are thankful!

If you do plan on giving a financial gift, check to see if your company will double or even triple your contribution by taking advantage of your employer's matching gift program.

Maybe you can't give a financial gift the year.  That's ok.  We need prayer warriors!  We need people to pray for our residents-- that they will have clarity of mind, good health, and feel the unconditional love within these walls.  Pray for our team-- that we are equipped for every situation, that we have the energy needed for each day, and that our feet will be exactly where God wants them at all times.  Pray for our donors-- that God lays it on their hearts to give so that lives can continue to be saved and changed.  Pray for our Board-- that God will bless them with incredible vision and wisdom for our ministry.  Pray for those moms that have been impacted by our Home, the children that are growing, and that the Holy Spirit stays close to them through the good and bad days.

Merry Christmas!

A Life Well Lived... Gary Sumner

We started the week with a celebration of a life well lived…  the life of Gary Sumner.

Our paths crossed in 2002 when I was working for Family Life Services and completed a homestudy that permitted the Sumner family to provide care for the babies that were transitioning into their “forever family”.  I remember sitting at the table hearing this couple speak with such respect for birth families, how they themselves were blessed by adoption three times, and how they desired to be able to be a part of the process for other families on the adoption journey.

Within a few months, my own family moved in the neighborhood just a few doors down from the Sumner’s front door.   I didn’t go see them often, by I was always greeted with a wave as I drove by their home… even when Gary was on the lawnmower.  I knew he was looking to see who was driving by, who he could smile at, and bless them with a wave as his face would light up.  One thing was evident… Gary truly cared about people.

While sitting in the service, one story spoke volumes to me.  His son spoke with great appreciation for a conversation that they had while walking around the neighborhood.  Gary asked his son, “did you cherish her?”  It is safe to assume that he had experienced a breakup, and Dad was stepping-in to help him process and grow from the loss of the relationship.

I sat in that pew and held back tears as I soaked in the power of that simple question… do I cherish those that I connect with? Gary cherished his wife which was evident every time I saw them.  Gary cherished his family—oh how he adored those kids!  Gary cherished each of the 19 foster babies that they welcomed into their home… even if it was just for a short amount of time.

No doubt, Gary will be missed.  But, he left an incredible legacy.  I consider it an honor to have called him friend.

Please keep the Sumner family in prayer as they navigate the weeks ahead.

The Kindness of Others

On Saturday morning while many were sleeping in, starting laundry, or debating what to do for the day, a group of ladies from Union Street Missionary Baptist Church were traveling an hour to donate their time to our ministry.

As they piled in the home, they were excited to help and truly be the hands and feet of Christ.  The simple but time consuming task that they completed will impact each parenting mother that completes our program!  As the Houseparent pulled together the many donations we have received from our Amazon Wish List, the ladies started sorting and creating our first batch of New Mom Starter Bags.  These bags will be given close to delivery and include essentials that each mom will need for those first few weeks.

Wondering what is in each bag?  First, we have diaper bags that are sturdy and gender neutral.  We then fill each one with the same items although color appropriate for a girl or boy—onesies, a sleeper, receiving blanket, a healthcare kit, bibs, burp cloths, diapers, wipes, gas drops, etc.

What a blessing to see the bags filled and nearly ready to be handed out.  However, we were a few items short.  To complete the bags, we are still needing:

Are you interested in filling this need?  If so, visit our Amazon Wish List to make a purchase or consider buying them at your local store.

We are working together to make a difference by supporting these young ladies that bravely choose life.  Now, let’s help them be successful!

Serving our Community

Last evening, we joined local nonprofits that were being honored at the 2015 Lynchburg Living Giving Back Awards Reception.  The room was filled with a buzz as people mingled, laughed, and shared updates of happenings within the organizations they represented.

As we took our seats for the presentation, the Managing Editor, Jennifer Redmond, shared that over 170 organizations were in the initial round with only the top 25 being recognized in the magazine.  Looking around the room, I saw many familiar faces of those that we have partnered with as we work together for the common goal of making an impact in someone’s life.

To be a small part of the event was an honor as the Liberty Godparent Maternity Home was voted the #6 Nonprofit in our community for 2015.  Thank you to all that took time to vote!  We appreciate you.

I must also say a special congratulation to Family LifeServices, our partner ministry, who were voted #3. It is an pleasure to share a building with their team, brainstorm on ways to better impact our community, and see lives changed because of the compassion they display.

Congratulations to all of the top-voted local nonprofits!  It was encouraging to sit with many others that are are passionate about impacting lives and improving our community.

Join the Movement... Make an Impact!

Are we pro-adoption or pro-parenting?  Actually, we are both.  Most important, we are pro-life.

With this in mind, we educate and support our residents in whatever decision they choose for their child.  In order to do this in a manner that is balanced, we are constantly educating the team and reaching out for resources.

A few years ago, we learned of a new organization, Bravelove, and loved their desire to change the perception of adoption.   They promote adoption by using honest, informative, and hopeful communication as they strive to reach every community with a positive adoption message.

The Liberty Godparent Home and Family Life Services were asked to be part of a video “Together We Can Make an Impact” which shows clips of individuals from all across the US that share this same goal. When you have a few moments, watch the video and I highly recommend watching minute 6:10-6:30 (wink, wink).

If you know a young lady that is pregnant and considering an adoption plan for her child, please pass on our contact information.  Our Home is equipped to help her walk through the decision making process, help her create positive goals for the future, and ensure that she has the support to move forward in life!

Adoption is a tough decision for a birth family and the hardest decision anyone chooses to make. When I think of who birth moms are, a few words come to mind….
…. Unmeasurable love
…. Stronger than Wonder Woman
…. Brave
…. Trusting
…. Broken Hearted
…. Determined

Watch this Bravelove video.  Pass it along.

And then give us your thoughts… when you think of a birth mom, what words come to mind?

The Bridge Event

Over the past several years, we have been able to partner with Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center and work together to meet the needs of several young ladies in our community. I honestly believe that a couple of young ladies would have chosen to have an abortion if not for our partnership. Pregnancy Care Centers are on the front lines, working with women providing pregnancy tests as well as initial counseling. Maternity homes, such as the Liberty Godparent Home (LGH),are able to come in to provide housing and long term care for these women who choose life for their children. What an exciting partnership!

We are excited to come alongside of the Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center and host the Bridge Event. It is our goal that through this event, maternity homes and pregnancy centers will come together to better meet the needs of the women and children we serve.

The Bridge Event is a networking event geared towards gathering and training professionals working with unplanned pregnancies. We, along with the Blue Ridge Pregnancy Center and have invited Maternity Homes and Pregnancy Centers in Virginia and several from surrounding states. Throughout the day, we will be hosting sessions such as avoiding burnout, utilizing social media, and how to network together. During the lunch hour, we will be shuttling people to LGH and allowing them the opportunity to tour our facility while they enjoy a complimentary box lunch.

If you work with unplanned pregnancies as a professional or volunteer, we would love for you to make plans to join us on November 12th from 9am - 4pm at the Liberty University Hancock Welcome Center in Lynchburg, VA.
